eSIM data in 175+ countries

Quick guide to Freedom international calling and texting

Calling or texting in another country usually results in extra fees, even if you’re using an eSIM for data. Here’s what to expect with Freedom …

As a Freedom customer, you have a few choices when you travel internationally and want to keep your regular phone number active.

Freedom daily & monthly plans

Freedom mobile customers who plan on doing a lot of calling and texting can add one of Freedom’s Big Gig Roam Extra plans to their account if they want to pay a flat rate for every day they use their phone on vacation in select countries.

If your destination isn’t on the list, or you’ll be travelling for a long time, Freedom also offers a World Traveller plan where you can pay a monthly fee to access cheaper prices on pay-per-use rates.

If you’re already planning on using an eSIM for affordable prepaid data while you travel, you might not want to pay for Big Gig Roam Extra Plan (which includes data).

If you have used a Big Gig Roam Extra plan before, Freedom might automatically activate Big Gig Roam Extra once they detect you have arrived in another country. If you’ve never used Big Gig Roam Extra before, you may need to contact Freedom or log into your Freedom account and request it.

Freedom pay-per-use roaming rates

Freedom customers who don’t plan on doing much international calling and texting can choose the pay-per-use route and pay only for individual phone calls (calling minutes) and text messages while they’re visiting another country.

Freedom’s pay-per-use option means you can pay set fees every time you rely on Freedom for data, a phone call, or a text message that occurs internationally. To see rates, choose the country you’ll be visiting.

If you’re already planning on using an eSIM for affordable prepaid data while you travel, you will only pay Freedom for individual calls and text messages.

If you have used one of Freedom’s daily or monthly travel plans on previous trips, but prefer to go the pay-per-use route on this trip instead, you should contact Freedom and make sure they don’t automatically place you on a daily or monthly travel plans plan once they detect you’re in another country.

Using your Freedom phone number internationally

Do I choose the Freedom mobile ‘Big Gig Roam Extra’ international plan, or their pay-per-use option?

If you’ll be using an eSIM for travel data and won’t be calling or texting too often, we recommend using the pay-as-you-go option.

If you’ve used Freedom’s ‘Big Gig Roam Extra’ plan before and you wish to use their pay-per-use option on your next trip because you’re using an eSIM for data this time, contact Freedom and make sure you won’t be automatically placed on the ‘Big Gig Roam Extra’ when you leave the country.

What do I say to Freedom

If you’re speaking with a Freedom representative, here’s how you can explain it: “I will be using a prepaid eSIM data package during my upcoming trip, but I want to keep using my phone number. I want to make sure I will only be charged pay-per-use rates for calls and texts. I do not need any travel data, because I will be using my eSIM for that.”

If you have any questions about how to use your Freedom phone number alongside an eSIM from aloSIM, please reach out to aloSIM Support and we’d be happy to help.

How do I set my phone to prevent Freedom roaming charges?

Once you’ve confirmed with Freedom that you will be charged on a pay-as-you-go basis to use your Freedom phone number during international travel, it only takes a few minutes to make sure your phone is configured correctly.

Using our roaming guides, you’ll make sure your phone knows to use aloSIM (your eSIM) for all data usage, while still keeping your regular phone number available for calling and texting.
