Quick guide to T-Mobile international calling and texting

Calling and texting abroad usually results in extra charges, even if you’re using an eSIM for data. Here’s what to expect with T-Mobile …

Can I use my T-Mobile phone internationally?

Yes, you can! T-Mobile provides their customers with the ability to use their phones while travelling internationally, and there are several different ways they charge for this service.

T-Mobile customers can choose from travel plans with unlimited data (from your regular plan) and unlimited texting with a per-minute fee for calls, or use their pay-per-use option for data usage, texting, and calling. (And you can save big bucks by using an eSIM for all data, and only using T-Mobile for calls and texts.)

Is it expensive to use pay-as-you-go rates from T-Mobile?

If you plan on making a lot of phone calls and sending a lot of texts while you’re travelling, paying individually per call and per text can add up quickly, and it might make sense to use one of T-Mobile’s plans with unlimited texting.

But if you won’t be calling/texting much while you travel (remember, iMessage doesn’t count as texting), it will be much cheaper to use an eSIM for data and only pay T-Mobile for any active calling minutes and outgoing texts. (Incoming texts will just be deducted from your regular T-Mobile plan allotment.)

How do I use eSIM data with T-Mobile calling/texting?

1. Make sure you have a device that supports eSIM

2. Tell T-Mobile you don’t want a travel plan

3. Download the free aloSIM app

4. Buy and install an eSIM (digital SIM)

5. Activate your prepaid data package

During activation, we’ll show you how to set your device to keep your phone number active, while preventing roaming on your T-Mobile plan. You’ll only pay T-Mobile for calls and texts, not data!

If I use an eSIM for data, will T-Mobile charge me for data usage, too?

If you’re using an eSIM for all data usage, you have disabled Data Roaming for your T-Mobile SIM, and you have opted out of any automatic T-Mobile roaming plans, they will not charge you data roaming fees.

Whether you have an iPhone, Samsung, or Google Pixel device, we can show you how to keep your phone number available while preventing your T-Mobile SIM from “roaming” and using data while you travel.
