Confirm activation. It won’t activate until you have arrived.
Asked to choose a data source? Select your eSIM if you’re travelling. If you’re still at home, choose your primary SIM.
Asked to choose a default line? Always choose your primary SIM.
‘Home’ or ‘Abroad’? Select ‘Abroad’ because this is for travel.
‘Voice & Data’ or ‘Data Only’? Choose ‘Data Only.’
Optional: Label your travel eSIM so you can easily identify it later – for example “USA trip” or “South Africa (Mom’s iPhone)”
Go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Cellular’
Select your eSIM and toggle on ‘Turn On This Line’
Toggle on ‘Data Roaming’ for your eSIM
Under ‘Cellular Data’ select your eSIM
Travelling today? Your eSIM should connect when you arrive. Leaving another day? Wait to do these steps until you’re travelling.
Your regular phone carrier may try to charge you roaming fees for data (internet), phone calls, and texts while you’re in another country.
Before you go, pick one of the following options:
Toggle off ‘Data Roaming’ on your primary SIM. This prevents it from using internet. Carrier fees may apply for calls and texts.
Toggle off your primary SIM completely. No data, calls, or texts. There won’t be any surprise charges on your next carrier bill.
On your iPhone or iPad, go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Cellular’ to select your primary SIM and adjust your roaming settings.
Once you land, toggle off ‘Airplane Mode’
Wait 1–2 minutes for it to connect
Check My eSIMs in the aloSIM app – your eSIM should show ‘Active’
You’re connected – enjoy fast local data for your trip
Need more data? Go to My eSIMs, select your eSIM, and tap Top up to add another data package.
We’ll give you a free international number for calling and texting anywhere in the world while you’re away.
Let’s answer your questions about using an eSIM for your upcoming trip.
We recommend installing your eSIM a few days before you leave for your trip, when you’re at home with a strong Wi-Fi connection. Your data package won’t start working until you arrive at your destination.
Before you leave home
If your plan is for an upcoming trip, install it while you’re still home so you can have internet the moment you arrive.
Already travelling
You can also install after you arrive, and start using your data right away. Just make sure you have Wi-Fi to install it.
Yes! If your phone has dual SIM capabilities, you can use your regular SIM and your aloSIM eSIM at the same time.
Keep your number for calls and texts
You can keep your regular number active for calls and texts, while using your aloSIM eSIM for mobile data (internet).
Check your carrier’s roaming rates
Ask your regular phone carrier if they charge for calls and texts that happen in another country, so you avoid a surprise bill.

These days, almost every iPhone is eSIM compatible. iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and all newer models support eSIM, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Your iPhone also needs to be carrier-unlocked to use a travel eSIM.
Yes! iPhones without a SIM tray work perfectly with aloSIM. Your iPhone can hold many eSIMs at once, even though it can only use 1-2 at a time.
When you’re leaving for a new country, prepare your phone so it connects as soon as you arrive. On your iPhone, go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Cellular’ to make sure your eSIM is toggled on, with ‘Data Roaming’ toggled on. Then go back to ‘Cellular’ and select ‘Cellular Data,’ where you’ll select your aloSIM eSIM as your data source. You will connect to the internet as soon as you arrive (after toggling off Airplane Mode).
Absolutely, yes. iMessage and FaceTime will keep working normally with your Apple ID over any internet connection, including your aloSIM data. On your iPhone, go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Messages’ and ‘Send & Receive’ to make sure you can send/receive messages with your Apple ID.
This setting lets your iPhone use multiple SIMs for mobile data (internet) in case one has a weaker signal. It lives under ‘Settings’ then ‘Cellular’ and ‘Cellular Data’ on your iPhone.
Do not enable Cellular Data Switching, because you want your aloSIM eSIM to be your iPhone’s only data source when you’re travelling.
We recommend updating your roaming settings while you’re still at home. Toggle on ‘Data Roaming’ for your travel eSIM so it’s allowed to connect to all available networks. Toggle off ‘Data Roaming’ for your primary SIM so it cannot use the internet outside of your regular coverage area.
On your iPhone, go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Cellular’ and ‘Cellular Data.’ The selected SIM is the one your iPhone is using for all mobile data (internet).
Make sure ‘Allow Cellular Data Switching’ is toggled off, so your iPhone doesn’t try to use your regular SIM for internet abroad.
If you want prevent all roaming charges while you’re travelling, go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Cellular’ and fully toggle off your regular SIM — no calls, no texts, no internet, and no extra fees on your next phone bill.
