How much travel data do I need in Europe?

The amount of Europe data you’ll need really depends on (A) how much time you’ll be near a safe Wi-Fi connection, (B) how much time you typically spend on your phone on vacation, and (C) how often you might need internet access to do something important like check driving directions, make a reservation, or call an Uber.

Our prepaid Europe data packages start at just 1 GB for $5 USD, so you can always start small and top up your eSIM if you need more data mid-way through your Europe trip. We also have a pretty cool travel data calculator that can help.

Should I buy individual Europe eSIMs, or a regional Europe eSIM?

Totally up to you! While we have a Europe eSIM (32 countries), a Western Europe eSIM (4 countries), and an Eastern Europe eSIM (11 countries), we also sell country-specific eSIMs.

Prefer to buy a single-country eSIM data package? Our lineup includes Austria eSIMs, France eSIMs, Germany eSIMs, Netherlands eSIMs, Portugal eSIMs, Spain eSIMs, Switzerland eSIMs, Hungary eSIMs, Slovakia eSIMsGreece eSIMs, and more.

Will I get stuck paying roaming charges if I use a Europe eSIM?

Roaming charges are the expensive fees that occur when you leave your regular coverage zone but still rely on your regular cell phone plan. (i.e. You travel to another country, but call, text, and use data normally like you’re still at home.)

When you use an eSIM for travel data, we show you exactly how to use your eSIM to avoid roaming charges with your home carrier. As long as you check your roaming settings carefully, you won’t have to worry about seeing unpleasant carrier charges on your next phone bill.

How do I make phone calls and text when I'm in Europe?

If you want to use your regular phone number when you’re in Europe, we’ll show you how.

It’s easy to make sure your phone can still make/receive phone calls and send/receive text messages when you’re travelling through Europe, and you’ll only pay per active calling minute or text, using your carrier’s pay-per-use rates.

The important part is setting your phone to only use your eSIM for data while you’re in Europe, so you avoid carrier roaming charges by preventing your regular SIM/regular cell plan from using any data while you’re travelling.

How does a Europe eSIM compare to other Europe data options?

Roaming with your regular SIM card: This is easy because you don’t have to do anything, but expect a VERY expensive phone bill once you’re back at home. Roaming charges add up quickly.

Inserting a local SIM card for Europe: These aren’t always easy to find and you have to remove your regular SIM card, which means you’ll lose all access to your regular phone number while you’re in Europe.

Downloading a digital SIM for Europe: As long as your phone supports eSIM, a downloadable Europe SIM is the fastest and cheapest way to get mobile data in Europe without paying roaming charges. Starts at five bucks a week!

FAQs about using a Europe eSIM

Check your device

Most newer phones, tablets, and computers are already eSIM-compatible, so use our eSIM device checker to make sure you have a device that can accept an eSIM data plan.

Free Wi-Fi is great when it’s available and working well, but some destinations make it just about impossible to get a good connection. That’s why it’s nice to have data as a backup to stay connected.

Some travellers also dislike using free Wi-Fi because of potential risks and privacy breaches, so they prefer to have their own private internet connection everywhere they go by using an eSIM.

We’re proud to provide aloSIM customers with fast eSIM data connections that allow them to talk, text, surf, and stream comfortably. You’ll likely experience a 4G (sometimes 5G) or LTE equivalent network in most locations, depending on what’s available in the area.

Installation guides

We have detailed eSIM installation instructions for all compatible devices, so whether you’re looking to add eSIM data to an iPhone or iPad, Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, or something else, we’ll be able to walk you through the eSIM set-up process easily.
