Fido international calling and texting

Fido

Calling and texting abroad usually results in extra charges, even if you’re using an eSIM for data. Here’s what to expect …

Fido

Can I use my Fido phone internationally?

You can use your Fido phone number around the world, but traveling outside of Canada will result in additional charges if you use your Fido plan for data, calls, or texts.

For international travel, Fido offers Fido Roam, allowing you to pay a daily rate to use your current phone plan while abroad. This way, you can stay connected without worrying about unexpected charges.

Fido

How do I get the Fido Roam Plan?

1. Visit the Fido Roam Page
Check Fido Roam to see if your destination is supported. (185 locations are included.)

2. Verify Your Enrollment
Most postpaid Fido plans include Fido Roam by default, but to confirm your enrollment, text ROAM to 222.

3. Enable Roaming and Use Your Phone
Ensure that data roaming is switched on to make sure Fido Roam can be used.

Fido

Is the Fido Roam plan a good deal?

The Fido Roam plan is convenient for short trips, allowing you to use your existing plan in over 185 destinations with predictable daily charges. It’s especially useful if you need to stay connected without the hassle of buying a local SIM. However, the daily costs can add up on longer trips, making it less ideal for budget-conscious travelers.

If you want to travel on a budget and don’t plan on making many phone calls, it might be a better deal to use a prepaid eSIM data package (often only $5/week) and rely on pay-per-use rates for calls and texts.

How do I pair eSIM data with Fido calling/texting?

1. Make sure you have a device that supports eSIM

2. Download the free aloSIM app

3. Buy and install an eSIM (digital SIM)

4. Make sure you are NOT already enrolled in a travel plan

5. Activate your prepaid data package

During activation, we’ll show you how to set your device to keep your phone number active, while preventing roaming on your Fido plan. Then you’ll only pay Fido for individual calls and texts, not data!

Fido

What are the Fido pay-per-use rates if I don’t use a travel plan?

If you decide to use a prepaid eSIM data package and skip the Fido Roam plan, Fido will charge you pay-per-use rates for each phone call and text message.

(They won’t charge you for data, because we’ll show you how to restrict all data usage to your eSIM.)

Fido posts the most up-to-date rates on their website, but it’s typically anywhere between $1.99 to $4.00 for phone calls, and between $0.75 per text. (iMessages won’t count because we show you how to make them work over Wi-Fi or data.)

Fido

Is there a way to call and text cheaper than that when I’m travelling?

There are plenty of ways to talk and text while you’re travelling internationally.

Over either Wi-Fi or your eSIM data, iPhone users can rely on iMessage and FaceTime. There are also social media apps with messaging and calling.

Anyone can get a temporary phone number from Hushed for calling and texting over the internet on a private number.

Fido

If I use an eSIM for data, will Fido charge me for data, too?

If you’re using an eSIM for all data usage, you have disabled Data Roaming for your Fido SIM, and you have opted out of any automatic Fido roaming plans, they will not charge you data roaming fees.

Whether you have an iPhone, Samsung, or Google Pixel device, we can show you how to keep your phone number available while preventing your Fido SIM from “roaming” and using data while you travel.
