Best time to travel to Thailand

By all accounts, Thailand is a lovely destination no matter when you might show up. However, timing your trip could mean a difference between enjoying blue skies or moody monsoon season, crowds or quiet, full-priced flights or discount savings.

Depending on what you’re after, there are a few factors to consider when booking your trip. Here’s what you should consider about the best time to travel to Thailand.

Best time to travel to Thailand for weather

Cool, hot, or wet. These are the three seasons that Thailand offers visitors (and don’t worry because each can be great).

The cool season, which runs from November to February, is where you’ll find most tourists. Drawn to the manageable temperatures and low humidity, visitors flock to the north around Chiang Mai and along the Gulf of Thailand coastline.

Heat seekers who find accommodations near the water might opt for the hot season, which is March through May. The 35°C temperatures are not to be taken lightly and may not be ideal for everyone.

Monsoon season is between June and October, bringing dramatic and persistent rain. Despite the dampness, the lush green landscape and thinner crowds can work in your favour (if you don't mind getting a little wet).

Best time to travel to Thailand for festivals

It’s always worth planning a trip around Thailand’s rich and exciting festival calendar.

Songkran (April)

Thai New Year is one of the most exuberant celebrations in Southeast Asia. A multi-day water fight erupts in the streets, and no one is safe from the chaos and joy.

Loy Krathong (November)

Thousands of lanterns are released in the sky and lost-shaped floats drift downriver by candlelight for the festival of lights. Yi Peng in Chiang Mai is a spectacular sight, drawing visitors from around the globe to enjoy the event.

Chinese New Year (January or February)

Especially celebrated in Bangkok’s Chinatown district, the streets are filled with an electric spirit as crowds come to enjoy street food and dragon dances to ring in the new year.

Best time to travel to Thailand for budget travel

If you’re aiming to keep costs low when considering the best time to travel to Thailand, the shoulder seasons (May to June or October to November) should be when you book.

You will likely still catch the nice weather and can trust that flights and accommodations will be noticeably cheaper than in the peak months. The most popular locations will also be much easier to navigate before the January crowds take hold.

If you do choose to go between December and February, book well in advance to catch lower fares on flights and better prices before the beachside bungalows book up.
