Heading to Europe in the near future? To make the most out of your trip, lets dive into some secrets and tips every euro traveller should know!

For so many travellers, Europe is a dream destination, and for good reason. Ancient history meets a mix of unique cultures, and, of course, plenty of variety of delicious regional foods. What more could you ask for?

As straightforward as a European holiday might seem, if you’re a first-time Euro traveller, there are a few secrets you won’t find in most online guides (think: the know-how one gets from frequent travel, inside sources, and a local connection).

But you’re in luck. From avoiding tourist traps to respecting local customs, here’s a real peek at what you should know before hopping on that train to your next European city, from a seasoned Euro traveller.

Tourist traps to avoid as a Euro traveller

Of course you will want that iconic selfie in front of the Eiffel Tower; but be mindful of your “must-see” list. Once you’ve hit the spot you needed to see, avoid lingering in those high-tourist areas. Why?

In many major European cities, any restaurants or venues in close proximity to that landmark will likely serve overpriced, mediocre food. If the locals don’t eat there, neither should you.

Additionally, high-traffic tourist areas are usually hotspots for petty theft and pickpocketing, so for your own peace of mind and the security of your possessions, it’s best to avoid them.

Instead, just take a stroll a few blocks away from the tourist areas. The food will get better, the prices will drop, and the experience will become more authentic. Oh, and don’t cave to pressure. Skip the restaurants with guys waving menus at you on the street.

Hidden gems in Europe

Sure, there are reasons why everyone flocks to the stereotypical European destinations like Paris, Rome, and Amsterdam—but Europe is also full of lesser-known spots that are just as stunning, and promise to be far less crowded.

A few underrated destinations to consider include Slovenia (fairytale villages), Portugal (incredible wine and riverside views), or Belgium (scenic and lively).

Think carefully about what you want out of your destination. Looking for beach time? Skip Ibiza in favour of Albania’s Riviera, which offers the same stunning seaside but at half the cost.

Closing times and quiet hours

Note that, in much of Europe, some communities observe a form of quiet hours. In Germany, for example, the practice is known as Ruhezeit, involves certain times of days and Sundays wherein loud music or parties should be avoided.

Shops might close early and you could find yourself without food, an activity, or transportation. Plan ahead for these times and respect the local rhythm.

Take advantage of the downtime to FaceTime your friends back at home or share your adventures on social media.

Overhyped isn’t always overrated

Along the same theme as being mindful of tourist traps is the idea that some places are truly worth the hassle and there’s a reason for the hype.

Venice might make you feel like a packed sardine and Santorini might eat up most of your budget… but if you’re interested in experiencing them, then you should.

Take note of which places could warrant a day trip in lieu of a full stay, and read up on seasonal crowds as well as events and other occasions that might draw a larger crowd.

Take advantage of affordable transit and opt for smaller nearby towns that often offer a similar vibe for a lower cost and much less stress.

Keep these tips and mind, and you’ll have a smooth, worry-free trip to Europe!
