Banking information, addresses, personal photos, our location; our phones are basically a vault of our sensitive information. So, that begs the question: just how secure is that vault, and how can you protect data on a mobile device?

As unsavoury of an idea it may be, most of us already recognize that our mobile devices know more about us than our closest friends.

The good news is that with a few easy habit changes, we can all keep our data safe from prying eyes, sketchy plugins or apps, and any unfortunate breeches to our digital secret.

Use strong passwords

I would hope that we’re all past using basic passwords (please don’t tell me it’s your birthday, address, or worse “123456”) and, if not, then it’s time for an upgrade.

Make it long, make it complex, and make it something obscure and unrelated to your daily life. Combine letters, numbers, and symbols, and try not to repeat across multiple accounts.

If you struggle to keep track of the unending list of random passwords needed to exist online, consider using a password manager like 1Password that will create and store your passwords for you.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

Sorry to say, but even with an unguessable password, a second layer of security is also a good idea. Enable two-factor authentication for any account that offers it.

This way, even if someone cracks your codes or breaks through the first wall, they likely can’t get in without receiving the secondary series of numbers or a magic link, sent to your phone or email so that only you can access it.

Be discerning with apps

Snagging every new game or photo filter is certainly appealing, but ask yourself a few questions before tapping that download button.

Does it have any reviews? What are the app’s permissions and what will it be accessing on your phone? For example, a calculator app has no business accessing your contacts or microphone.

Be sure to only download apps from reputable resources like the Apple App Store or Google Play store and check your accounts regularly to audit if you are actually using them. Fewer apps always means fewer risks.

Encrypt your device

Modern smartphones often come with a built-in encryption feature that can scramble your data, making it unreadable without a password.

This can be accessed by both iPhone and Android users under “Settings”. Encrypting your data means that your personal information stays out of the wrong hands if your phone is ever lost or stolen.

Update your software

Keep your notifications on so that you know when updates are available for your apps and your device. Software updates often include patches to address vulnerabilities that could leave your device susceptible to hacking.

Leave automatic updates toggle on for your operating system and any apps so that you know you’re always up-to-date without any additional effort on your part.

Use a secure eSIM

If you’re planning on travelling, consider using an eSIM for reliable, secure mobile data. Apps like aloSIM don’t track your activity or collect unnecessary personal information. Using an eSIM is the ideal way to stay connected and protect data on a mobile device while travelling.
