How does eSIM work?

An eSIM is an embedded SIM card, and you probably already have an eSIM-compatible device. When you install an eSIM for a country or region, it lets your device connect to local networks in that area. This means your device will have data without needing Wi-Fi or paying roaming charges.

Use a North America eSIM to stay connected in Canada, the United States, and Mexico

While eSIM providers like aloSIM sell eSIM data packages for Canada, the United States, and Mexico, it makes sense to use a more universal eSIM if you’ll be traveling between multiple countries.

So if you’re planning on spending time in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, a North America eSIM will keep you connected in all three countries.

Just install it once, activate it when you’re ready to use it, and you’ll remain connected no matter which side of the border you’re on.

How much travel data do I need in North America?

Whether you’re coming to North America for a long weekend, or spending several weeks (even months) traveling between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, the amount of data you’ll use will vary.

If you’re going to be sticking close to a solid free Wi-Fi connection, chances are you’ll only need a gig or two in order to keep your regular phone number running (letting you call and text as usual).

But if you’ll be spending a lot of time out sightseeing, you may need a larger data package to stay connected. Luckily, you can always start small and add more data if you need it.

Will I pay roaming charges with a North America eSIM?

Nope, you absolutely won’t pay any roaming charges as long as you’re relying on a local eSIM for data.

(We’ll show you how to change the settings on your device to make sure it can’t try to connect you via your usual data plan.)

With more than 24 million square kilometers spread over three countries, North America has SO much to see and do. It’s hard to know where to begin, so here are a few of our favorites …

Palenque: This famous Maya city in Mexico dates back from the seventh century, and visitors can check out carvings, sculptures, and architecture.

Niagara Falls: Made of three different waterfalls, it’s easy to see why Niagara Falls is a natural wonder of the world. This is a popular day trip, but it’s also fun to stay overnight and see Niagara Falls lit up in different colours. It’s on the border of the U.S. and Canada, so you can view it from either country.

The Grand Canyon: Shaped by the strong Colorado River, this awe-inspiring sight in the United States attracts thousands of visitors each month from all over the world.

What’s the best time to visit North America?

When you’re planning your trip to North America, you’ll want to keep the weather in mind.

Try visiting Mexico in April or May, if you’re nervous about the heat: This is the ideal time to go if you’re looking for warm spring temperatures (high 60s and low 70s).

May and June are lovely in the United States, with spring in full bloom: If you want to visit one of the national parks in the U.S., like Yellowstone or Rocky Mountain, some say spring is the best time to go for a hike.

Canadian weather is especially nice April through June: If you enjoy the lush spring season, you may want to visit Canada from late April through early June. It’s especially lovely on the west coast, with its blooming trees, colourful gardens, and warm temperatures. But bring an umbrella!

What to pack for a vacation to North America

Since North America has mountains, beaches, and a wide range of temperatures, we’ll share a few of our favorite items that could work well in Canada, the United States, or Mexico …

Sunscreen: No matter the time of year, if you’re going to be outdoors, it’s important to wear sunscreen.

Umbrella: This is especially important in Canada and the United States, but hey, it can rain in Mexico, too!

Comfortable shoes: Definitely pack a good pair of shoes, whether you’re taking a guided walking tour, a nature trek, or wandering through shops and museums.

FAQs about eSIM in North America

Absolutely! If you’re travelling to the USA from Canada, you can use our North America eSIM to stay connected on both sides of the border.

Using an eSIM for USA travel from Canada means you’ll have a steady data connection on your trip, without roaming charges on your plan back in Canada.

Check your device

Most newer phones, tablets, and computers are already eSIM-compatible, so use our eSIM device checker to make sure you have a device that can accept an eSIM data plan.

Free Wi-Fi is great when it’s available and working well, but some destinations make it just about impossible to get a good connection. That’s why it’s nice to have data as a backup to stay connected.

We’re proud to provide aloSIM customers with fast eSIM data connections that allow them to talk, text, surf, and stream comfortably. You’ll likely experience a 4G (sometimes 5G) or LTE equivalent network in most locations, depending on what’s available in the area.

Installation guides

An eSIM is easy to install and activate. We have detailed eSIM installation instructions for all compatible devices, so whether you’re looking to add eSIM data to an iPhone or iPad, Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, or something else, we’ll be able to walk you through the eSIM set-up process easily.
